Student Council
In Balbriggan Educate Together, we believe that students have a very important role to play in our school.
A Student Council:
- helps improve school life for everybody;
- acts as the voice of the students;
- acts as a channel of communication within the school organisation between pupils, school and home.
Our student council is elected each October as part of the school’s Human Rights Celebration. This acknowledges the set of rights around children’s right to voice, opinion, freedom and experience of democracy. Each student from 2nd to 6th class is invited to write a manifesto outlining the reasons why they should be voted to represent their class. Before the election, candidates are asked to present their manifesto in a speech to their peers. The students then have an opportunity to vote for the two candidates they would like to elect to the student council.
The Student Council meets several times each term, participates in projects and assists in special events happening in the school. Meetings are facilitated by a teacher and items for the agenda are usually taken from the concern boxes that are kept in each class and are collected prior to the meeting from council members and other teachers.
Over the course of their term of office, the Student Council will also have opportunities to visit and work closely with the Ombudsman for Children, visit the Dáil and facilitate and run a Human Rights Defender election for the whole school.
